As a Freedom of Association absolutist…
That’s great. Absolutist. Which means an absolute right to associate, or not associate, with whomever you wish, with no restriction or coercion whatsoever.
But what happens if people decide that they do not want to associate with, live in the same society with, race-mixing Derbyshire and his Chinese wife? What if people decide that they do not want to live in the same America as the entire Derbyshire clan, including the mixed-race children?
Derbyshire’s entire argument boils down to this thesis: “Yes, miscegenation is bad, but only a small number of people are doing it, so it’s fine for me to do it. And if you have a problem with that, then come over to my house and I’ll punch you in the face.”
If “absolutism” stops at someone’s personal self-interests, then it is not genuine absolutism. It is hypocrisy.
